GMSI offer blasting solutions for surface as well as underground mining applications, enabling blasting technicians and miners a safe as possible blasting environment. For underground mines we offer a centralized blasting solution which can be controlled from above ground using the PED headend (BlastPED), and for surface mining we offer a remote blasting solution which can initiate blasts as far as 4 km from the blasting site (BlastPED ST) using a radio link.

Wireless Communication (ImPact)
Impact technology is developed by Mine Site Technologies (MST) to extend the capabilities of existing Ethernet topologies on site, for underground and surface mining. The Impact infrastructure is specifically designed to function under harsh conditions encountered in the mining industry. Impact takes over where other technologies reach their limits.
Through earth communications is realised using the PED® Communication System which is based on ultra-low frequency transmission that propagates through rock strata. In South African conditions this has been demonstrated at 1400 meters. The PED® System has been in use at mines for over fifteen years and remains the only proven through-the-earth (TTE) communication system in use at mines. Refinements to the system over this time have further improved its reliability and functionality.
Through knowledge of the location of assets/personnel at any point in time, the process flow of one’s business can be greatly optimised. Tracking consists of more than just merely knowing the location of an asset; it can be used to monitor certain areas, creating alarms/events on certain conditions (low inventory levels, assets leaving specific area), managing personnel, etc. Tracking solutions can be implemented using either active/passive solutions, or a combination of both.
MST’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP) is a cost effective step to improve asset management and productivity. The VIP module transmits location aware real time production and maintenance related data such as payload, vital vehicle diagnostics and location to mine management/ERP systems through wireless Ethernet communication. The VIP unit also enables proximity detection by being able to read tags carried by people.
